Kuiper strikes a happy pose with the monument.

Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States

“Geography is just physics slowed down, with a couple of trees stuck in it.” Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent, 1998

Kuiper is excited to share with you this picture of him at the geographic center of the (contiguous) United States, just outside of Lebanon, KS! The actual location is on private land about half a mile away. The farmer wasn’t too keen on visitors way back when, so this monument was erected nearby. The location was determined in 1918 by a government agency (and I checked the source on this) balancing a cardboard cutout of the United States on a point. It turned out to be pretty accurate.
