Titan I Rocket In Gotte, Nebraska

“When ze rockets go up, who cares where zey come down. Zat’s not my department, says Whippet Von Brown.” Tom Lehrer (mostly), “Werner Von Braun,” 1965

Kuiper is posing in front of a Titan I ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) in a park in Kimball, Nebraska. Titan I rockets were the first multistage ICBM built by the United States. They were in use from 1962-1965, but were made obsolete by the deployment of Titan II in 1963. Titan I was not used in the space program, but its successor was used to launch Gemini.
