Kuiper isn’t dying of boredom just anywhere. ? In these photos, he’s dying of boredom on the floor of a real Apollo Mobile Quarantine Facility. This one was used by the crew of Apollo 12. It is identical to the Airstream used by the crew of Apollo 11 for the first 2.5 days after splashdown. The Apollo 11 MQF is currently on display at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazey Center in Chantilly, VA.
@astromichaelcollins said recently that quarantine wasn’t so bad. They had “hot showers, gin and steak.” ??? And on this day in 1969, Neil Armstrong even got a surprise party and a birthday cake!
After blowing out all 26 candles* in one go (and presumably making a wish), Neil cut the cake and pretended to hand pieces to the crew’s families through a large glass window. According to the video (which I’ll link in story), everyone appeared to be have a ball at the party.
Neil Armstrong would have been 89 today. ❤️ Happy birthday, Neil.
* (He was actually turning 39, but they only had 26 candles on hand in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory.)
